How to register a marriage in Slovenia

Marriage

Required documents

British nationals who want to get married in Slovenia should submit the following documents to the district Registrar Office ( "Matični urad" at the "Upravna enota, Oddelek za upravne notranje zadeve"):

  • Passport
  • Birth Certificate (original or certified copy).
Apostille certificate is required for the purpose of document authentication; it can be only obtained at the Legalisation Office in London, tel. +44 20 7008 1111. The Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirements of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, being in force since 10/15/1981, enables certification by an apostille, and therefore such a document is recognised by any Convention country. The UK and Slovenia are parties to this convention.
  • Certificate of no impediment
Certificate of no impediment can be issued at the British Embassy Ljubljana. You should present your and your partner’s passports and birth certificates. After you have signed an affidavit before a consular officer in which the applicant declares that he or she is free to marry the other party. A notice of your marriage will be hanged on the Board in the Consular waiting room. The notice must be hung at the board for 15+21 days (during this time you have to stay in Slovenia). After that you will be issued with the Certificate of no legal impediment (in Slovene and English language). This can also be done in the UK, where notice must be displayed for 21 days.
  • Documentary proof of dissolution of previous marriages, if any, e.g. final divorce or annulment decrees. The divorce decree should be presented to the Slovene district court to be certified as legally valid in Slovenia.
  • Widow/widower - a Death Certificate of the deceased spouse.

All documents should be officially translated into Slovene language. Documents are valid for 3 months since the date of issuance.

All fees are payable in Euros at a fixed Consular rate of exchange.
